I have read many sites that have said women can experience a normal period all throughout pregnancy. This does not make any sense to me. A period is the shedding of the lining of the uterus. Therefore, a woman could not possibly have a period and be pregnant. If there is bleeding during pregnancy what would cause it to look like a normal period? By a normal period, I mean cramping, heavy bleeding, and lasting for 6 days or so.

You are right: a period means that no pregnancy occurred, and therefore it is not possible to have a period and be pregnant.

It is possible for a pregnant person to experience bleeding, for a lot of possible different reasons, but it would be very unlikely for that bleeding to looke exactly like someone's regular period.

That is what I figured. If there is any bleeding during pregnancy, wouldn't it usually just look like spotting or a very light period?

It really depends. Sometimes bleeding can be very heavy, like if a miscarriage is starting later on in a pregnancy.

But the thing is, we have the technology now that no one has to rely on trying to sort out what bleeding means per figuring out if they're pregnant. 1700 this isn't. This is why when people are concerned about pregnancy, we simply advise they take a pregnancy test. Unless someone has absolutely no access to testing, it just doesn't make any kind of sense to focus on this kind of thing, as pregnancy tests are WORLDS more accurate.

Ok thanks for the information. I was just curious to what would cause bleeding during pregnancy because it seems the internet is full of stories about how someone was pregnant but had normal periods.

I hear you, but at the same time, the internet is full of misinformation or anecdotes that are really hard to believe no matter what the subject matter.

The thing about the net is that it's not peer-reviewed, save in the places where it is. That's why we advise that people only seek out this kind of information from credible sources online.
