So my girlfriend is anemic and she always feels sick during her period, but this month she had a really heavy one and felt really nauseous before, during, and now after her period. She also has gas, bloating, and she's been an emotional wreck lately. Basically I have two questions about this: 1) Is it normal for people with anemia to get horrible pms every now and then? 2) Is there anything I can do to help her feel better, or should she maybe see a doctor?

Is she in treatment for her anemia? If so, it would be a good idea for her to bring up her difficult periods with her doctor. If she is not in treatment for her anemia, I would suggest she seek out a doctor. Anemia can make periods a bit rough, but there is no reason why she should just suffer through that - there are treatment options that can make her feel better.

Thank you for the feedback, she isnt currently in treatment fir her anemia because she just recently switched to a new doctor, and she's still waiting for the results of her analysis. She's also vegetarian which might make her more sick because she doesn't take in a lot of iron.

So, when she goes to her healthcare provider to discuss her blood test results, she definitely needs to tell them how she's been feeling around her periods.

Speaking as someone who has also struggled with iron deficiencies over the years, I can say that there's a lot of good information out there about how to get enough iron as a vegetarian so that's information she might want to explore. Doing that kind of research and making any changes she needs to make is up to her, though. [Smile]

Thanks Robin, I'll let her know that there's information out there and let her decide how she wants to try to control her anemia. And she told her doctor about how she's been feeling and he told her once they get the test results back they will decide whether or not to give her iron supplements
