Hello,

I just have a question related to periods:
I started to have PMS symptoms about a week and a half ago and then, since last Friday, I have been having brown discharge on and off. I usually start my period two days after the brown discharge appears, but this time it has been going on much longer.
I haven't had a pregnancy risk as I haven't had any sexual contact. I also had a period last month which ended a day earlier than usual. I want to wait a few days and see if my period shows up before going to see the doctor, but wanted to ask if this situation can happen sometimes. It's never happened to me before, so, that's why I'm a bit worried. Thanks.

HI Nomada90,

It's not unusual for someone's menstrual cycle to do things a little differently every once in a while. Our bodies aren't machines, and all sorts of things can impact our cycles. Sometimes people will even just have a little discharge and skip their periods completely.

For right now, this doesn't sound like anything to be concerned about. It's usually when strange things happen more than a couple of times that consultation with a doctor is advisable.

Thanks very much, Robin.
I appreciate your quick response. It's good to know that if this is a one-off thing, it's nothing to be concerned about.
Thanks again for the reassurance.

You're welcome. Again, our bodies aren't machines so they're not going to do the same thing all the time. [Smile] I'm glad this was helpful to you.

Hi,
I just had a quick question to follow up on:
The brown discharge lasted about 5 days during which I had all of the normal PMS symptoms and then on the 6th, it disappeared along with the PMS symptoms and I saw instead that I had egg white cervical mucus, indicating that I was ovulating.
Was the brown discharge considered my period? I'm just curious as to what happened and why...
I mentioned this to my doctor, but she didn't seem to see a problem...

Hi there Nomada90,

First I'd like to ask you, did your doctor happen to explain why she didn't see a problem with the brown discharge?

No, she didn't actually; She said it can happen, but I wasn't entirely convinced by what she said.

So what I'm familiar with, in all my years of education (edit: to clarify, I'm a college student, not a wisened one) and a couple months of working with Scarleteen, discharge that is tinted brown is not unheard of, and tends to follow a menses.

And as this article here indicates, discharge that is chunky or heavy, watery, odorous or grayish, greenish, yellowish or pinkish may be an indicator of some kind of infection.

As your doctor is a certified health professional, I'm inclined to trust her response- but you know her much better than I do. If you feel like there's something going on (which we aren't able to diagnose for you, unfortunately), it may be in your interest to receive a second opinion from another doctor/gynecologist.

Thank you for that, Allie. I appreciate your response.
I don't think it's an infection as the discharge went back to its regular state-my cervical mucus tends to be pretty heavy, but I'll keep a look for anything else unusual. I'll see what happens during my period and if there's a problem, I'll get it checked again.
Thanks again for your advice!
