I have a step-daughter who is 9 years old, although menarche may be a little way off I want to get period supplies for her so she can familiarise herself with them in advance, and also I want to get her a few books, but not sure what books to get.

The only book I've looked at is 'Period.' by JoAnn Loulan - I think this is a little too immature for her and it doesn't explain enough, although I do like that it's a balanced view of menstruation (not all about negatives about periods) and at least mentions 'alternative' options like menstrual cups.

Can you recommend any good books? Preferably books that are not anti-menstruation and mention sanitary products other than just tampons or pads.

(she will be getting 'Cycle Savvy' by Weschler)

What an awesome stepmom you are! [Smile]

I think Cycle Savvy is probably the best of all of these, but for sure, some of it is going to be a bit of a reach for a 9-year-old reader.

I do think Period may be a little more like it, and perhaps between the two, you've got your fit? I'm afraid that those two are really the only two I think are good per this subject and a younger age group that are specifically focused on menstruation.

"Deal With It," is a much bigger book, with a larger scope, but it's got great style and includes menstruation information in a very positive way, too.

Lunapads ( also has a wonderful booklet, though, that a bunch of us were part of making, and it's very period-positive.
