I'm getting the Mirena on April 11th (yay!) but anyways I had sex April 1st and the next day started spotting. I'm currently on Nuvaring and we used a condom as well so I feel that pregnancy is highly unlikely. It was totally protected sex. I'm still spotting quite a bit. I'll be taking my Nuvaring out on the ninth. So did sex somehow cause the spotting or was it just a coincidence and this bleeding is just breakthrough bleeding? If its just breakthrough bleeding then why is it happening I've never had it happen before and I've been on the Nuvaring for about a year. My main concern is pregnancy although as I said I feel that since it was protected sex that its highly unlikely. But since the spotting started the next day could that maybe be implantation bleeding? I don't think it is since its still going on. I just need some...advice?

One thing to remember is that implantation bleeding, if it happens at all (which is not always the case when a pregnancy occurs), will definitely not show up the day after sex - implantation just doesn't happen that quickly!

Since your Mirena appointment is coming up soon, you could ask about the spotting then if it's still worrying you; I'm not sure why it would be happening now if you haven't noticed it before with the Nuvaring, but it doesn't sound like a cause for concern.
Like you said, a condom plus Nuvaring is a very effective combination! You can look up the effectiveness rates here: The Buddy System: Effectiveness Rates for Backing Up Your Birth Control With a Second Method

You're right, implantation definitely does not happen just one day after sex. I'm sorry I just wasn't thinking. I think I'll ask my doctor about the spotting just out of curiosity really, I'm a nursing major so I really should know all of this. Thank you!

People also seem to do this thing often where they figure that if something didn't happen for X amount of time, it can never happen. Our bodies are always shifting and changing, so that just isn't sound. Because it didn't happen with your Nuvaring in a year of use doesn't mean it can't be happening now.

Too, that spotting could also be about a vaginal abrasion of some kind, as well, which happens often enough, especially if and when people aren't using enough lubricant, or are engaging in sex with entry without being or staying very highly aroused.

Maybe it's a combination of some sort of irritation from sex and random spotting. I guess there's really no way to know.
