Hi,

I just got diagnosed with strep throat and was prescribed Amoxicillin, which I'll begin taking tonight. I'm three days into a brand-new pill pack (Tri-Sprintec). I know that antibiotics significantly lower the pill's effectiveness and my doctor made a point of reminding me of this. I'm in a long-distance relationship and won't see my boyfriend again until the 23rd, which is the first day of my next placebo week. We always back up with condoms, but I have a few additional questions:

1) By the time I'm all the way at the end of this pill pack, I'll have been done with my 7-day round of antibiotics for 12 whole days. Is my protection still severely compromised, provided I continue taking my pills like normal? Or should I abstain until I actually begin my withdrawal bleed to be extra careful? I'm most comfortable with the full protection of two birth control methods at all times.

2) Will the antibiotics do anything to compromise the effectiveness of the next pill pack I'll begin at the very end of this month?

Thank you so much!

Just FYI, we don't have any evidence that antibiotics "severely" impact pill effectiveness. They simply may decrease it. They also should not have any impact on your next pack.

Really, if you always back up with condoms (yay you!), then not only do you have STI protection, but you have a backup for things exactly like this.

Only you can figure out if that's enough protection for you to feel okay with, or if you'd rather put sex off the table this time around. That's just something for you to decide for yourself.
