Hi guys! I just realized I forgot to take my pill this morning... I'm on day four of a new pack, and I took the first one Sunday at 8:15 in the morning. I took this one at like 12:25, so a little over 4 hours late. Do I need a backup method for sex since I went over the 3 hour threshold, and if so, for how long do I need to use it? Thank you so much!

Hi wanderlusting,

It's unlikely that the effectiveness has been compromised in any significant way particularly if all other pills in this pack have been taken on time.

You always have the option of using a second method of birth control. When people are concerned that their birth control has been compromised, I generally suggest using a second method for the remainder of that cycle, just to be sure and feel more secure.

Here's lots of information on late and missed pills.

Three questions about taking the birth control pill (and plenty of answers)
