My friend asked me a question today that I didn't know the answer to so maybe I can get some clarification for her as well as me.

What is a missed pill when it comes to vomiting/diarrhea? She said she took her pill and she had an immediate upset stomache but managed to sleep for 2 hours before using the washroom and when she did it was more of a loose stool than full on diarrhea. She is on alesse21.

How long does the pill take to absorb each day? What does the pill pack really mean by diarrhea? And whether or not you had an upset stomache does the pill absorb all the same without going to the washroom immediately? And are loose stools a problem as well (following moderate to sever stomache cramps and pain). I have never given this muh though so this is news to me. Also should she take any extra pills even though the incident was a couple days ago?

HI There,

Diarrhea refers to persistent bouts of loose stools, lasting several hours or days (or for a few unfortunate people, longer than that). So, one bout of loose stools does not comprommise pill taking. I don't know how long it takes a pill to absorb, but I do know that the digestive system is a lengthy process, so one is not at all likely to just release a pill in a bowel movement. That's why the concern is only when nothing stays down (or in) for more than a few minutes.

The only thing that I know of that would compromise a pill's efectiveness in terms of digestion would be if someone vomited immediately after taking it, in which case, it's most likely that someone would vomit it up.

Does this help?
