I was taking Augmentin. The bottle says that it may cause a decrease in the effectiveness of my birth control (Loestrin 24 Fe) for one cycle of pills. I just finished taking my Augmentin (antibiotic) this morning at 5 AM, and I am supposed to start a NEW cycle of birth control pills tonight at 9 PM. Will those antibiotics still affect this new cycle?

Given you just finished, I'd personally play is safer and use a backup method, like a condom (a good idea anyway, since it prevents infections and having just had one, your immune system isn't in its best shape) for another week.

So you don't think it will affect the entire cycle, but I should still just wait another week?

No, it certainly shouldn't impact the whole cycle, if it even does this next week.

But you know, backing up any method with condoms is always a good idea for a lot of reasons regardless, so if you feel better backing up for longer, there's not usually any good reason NOT to.

Just another quick question. Do you think that I would be at risk if I wait just 5 days (after starting a new cycle of Loestrin 24 Fe after taking my last augmentin antibiotic before my 1st pill of the new cycle)?

Like I said, if you're asking me, I'd say to wait a full week before going without a backup. I do tend to err on the side of caution, but that's generally because people asking questions like this tend to not want to become pregnant in a very big way. [Smile]
