Hi [Smile]

My bf performed unprotected oral sex on me yesterday, and today we realized he had a small herpes sore on the corner of the mouth, so probably it was already ready to appear yesterday. Now I'm anxious of having been contaminated with genital herpes (like most people, I am contaminated with mouth herpes already, but it doesn't stress me that much).

I would like to know whether or not it is useful to get tested for it, before having any symptoms ? Because on one hand, I read that being tested when there are no active sores isn't that reliable, but on the other hand the virus can remain dormant for quite a while, so I guess it would be more clear if I got tested now... Any advice ?

As you know, there are two basic strains of herpes. HSV-I is known as oral herpes and HSV-II is known as genital herpes. It's possible to get one or both on the genitals, and you'd be more likely to get HSV-I from oral genital contact. Yes, it's a little confusing, I know.

Yes, the most accurate test is a culture from an open sore, but there are other means of testing. You can go to a doctor or sexual health clinic and request to be tested for the HSV strains. If you haven't had a full STI screening yet, that would be the perfect opportunity.

Some more information.
