Hello again,

I started birth control, Loestrin 24, and I'm on my first pack. I'm 20 pills in, I have four more until it's done. Everything is fine so far, but last night, I had unprotected sex for the first time. Looking back, I told my boyfriend that we won't be doing that EVER again, but we were both drunk, so bad decisions were made.

I've been taking my pill on the dot (give or take 30 mins on one or two occasions), none missed. I don't know when I'm actually protected after taking the pill. From what I read on the internet, it's from 7 days to 3 months. I'm really scared that because of my drunk mistake, I could be screwed. Should I take a plan B? I don't want to spend the money and get sick again, like the last time I took it, unless I'm not safe right now.

If anyone could tell me when birth control becomes effective and whether or not I should take plan b anyways, (it's been about 24 hours now..) it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

So you are on the withdrawal week of your first pack? If so, and if you have been taking the pill as directed so far, you should have full protection at this point.

Mind, the pill does not protect you from STIs, so if you and your partner haven't been tested recently, you'll still want to have that taken care of.

No, I am four pills from my placebo pills. Sorry for the misunderstanding.. I have four more until my withdrawal week. Does this make a huge difference?

Did you start the pill on the first day of you period? If not, how far from your period did you start the pill?

If you started the pill in the time frame between day 1 and day six of your period - you will be protected by now. If the pill was started after day six of your period - it's very likely you were protected when you had sex, as only having four pills left is almost the whole pack. However, if you started the pill after day 6 of you period and wanted to be 100% reassured you can take EC.

Yeah, doing a Sunday start is fine. Starting the pill between day one of your period and the Sunday after, your method will usually be fully effective after 7 days of use, so long as you've take pills consistently and correctly, which you have. So starting on the Sunday during your period should have you protected by now.
