I'm sure this sounds like a stupid question. Last night, I took the first pill of my new pack. I swallowed it without water but I felt like it hadn't gone down my esophagus all the way so I drank some water about a minute later. As I was drinking it, I got a little too much in my mouth and spit a little bit out. Would this decrease effectiveness? Like, would some of the pill have dissolved in the water that I spat out so I didn't get the full dose of hormones?

Additional information: I took a gulp, set the glass down, then decided to finish the rest of it which is when I got too much in my mouth. So after the first gulp, the pill would've been in my stomach.

Hi Furelise,

It sounds like you've got nothing to worry about here - even if the pill was still in your mouth it wouldn't have had enough time to dissolve enough to reduce effectiveness.

I wouldn't worry. [Smile]

Okay. Let's say, for all intents and purposes, that this counts as a missed pill. When would effectiveness be back to normal?

If there is an issue of a missed pill at any stage, then you need to figure that the the effectiveness of the whole pack may have been reduced and use extra precaution eg condoms for that entire cycle if you're worried.

But honestly, the situation you've described would not reduce effectiveness at all.
