Hey everyone,

My girlfriend takes her birth control pills at the same exact time every day, but a lot of times she dry swallows them (just as a habit that she does normally with all pills). Does doing this have any effect at all on the effectiveness of the pill, or effect the time they're taken at all?

Thank you

As long as the pill goes down, it should be fine.

Really though, you should suggest that your girlfriend break this habit. There are many medications that must be taken with foods, milk, or a certain amount of liquid in order for the medication to be broken down and absorbed properly. Taking a med without water occasionally if you simply cannot access anything else is okay...but it's not something you want to start doing with every pill.

Thank you for the help, I have mentioned that to her before but she still does it more often than not, so I'll talk with her again about it.

You're welcome. Obviously, it's her choice how she wants to take her medications...but it wouldn't hurt to suggest to her that she reconsider. It can impact some medications and it also could cause problems for her (meds taken dry can scratch the throat or can occasionally become stuck and eat at the lining of the esophagus).
