My boyfriend has been complaining a lot lately of his balls hurting. He has told his mom and she has made an appointment for a doctor. Over the phone the doctor thought he was suffering from a hernia. I have done research online, but I still don't understand it. Can anyone explain what a hernia is... specifically the type in one's groin area. Thank you.

An inguinal hernia is what happens when a loop of intestine bulges out of the abdomen and gets caught lower near the scrotum. It gets kinda knotted, like if you fold and release a garden hose. The hernia causes lots of pressure and strain on the muscles in the area, incl. intestinal blockage.

The doctors cut it open and put everything back in the right place and sew it back up again so it heals. It's simple surgery.

My inguinal hernia repair was done under local anaesthetic. There was no need for general anaesthesia and I walked out of the hospital about two hours later. Your boyfriend will have to be careful for a few weeks while the incision heals and some activity might be painful for a few weeks. But it is minor surgery.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.
