I forgot to ask my doctor about this and she won't be back in the office for a while since she is on vacation. I got the implanon inserted yesterday smack in the middle of my cycle around ovulation(she had a very long wait list for appointments so I just had to take what was available). How long should I wait to have sex without backup?

If inserted within seven days of the start of a period, it's effective immediately.
Otherwise -- like the timing for you -- you'll need to back up with a second method for one week.
Just remember the implant doesn't offer any protection against STIs, at any time. So, to manage those risks, you may need to always back up with condoms.
