I've recently switched from a Patch to a Pill for my birth control (been on the Pill for about three months now). I know that to have the medication be effective, you have to take it at the same time every day. I'm usually quite good at this, taking it on average, no later than 15-20 minutes after 6pm every day.

Of course, occasionally I will forget. (I have an alarm set on my phone, but if I don't have it near me, I tend not to remember right away.) I've still never gone more than a few hours past my normal time when I do forget. (I think the most I've been off by was 3 hours)

On days when I'm a few hours off, I will still treat it as a missed pill to be safe and follow the directions as needed for that. But I've been wondering, how much leeway does one have with a Pill when it comes to timing out the doses every day? About when should you start treating a late pill as a missed pill?

Thanks.

Hi Tashi! Being off by a few hours is not something to worry about - you'd very likely be considered a perfect user of the pill. It's good to use backup methods if that makes you more relaxed, though, and good anyway to protect against STIs (for example with condoms). [Smile]

Here's an article on this idea of what's a "late" pill, and what's a "missed" pill:
Three questions about taking the birth control pill (and plenty of answers)

“In a strange room, before you are emptied for sleep, what are you. And when you are filled with sleep you never were. I don’t know what I am. I don’t know if I am or not... how often have I lain beneath rain on a strange roof, thinking of home.”
