I dont fully understand why the male condom if used properly is 98% effective against pregnancy. If someone could explain this that'd be great. Thanks!

Even if used properly accidents can happen, the condom can break or slip off. I had one break once because we were going for a bit too long without taking a break and the lube probably dried up a little. If you have EC available in your area (which is what I did after I had the accident) you can take that after a condom failure. (I have been using condoms over a decade and I have only had a condom break once, and slip off once.)
