Hey, I haven't had sex in two and a half years...my ex was my first. And now I think I might be finally ready to get on with my life. I am seeing someone new and very nice and caring. I want to get on a method of birth control to be extra safe besides using a condom. We haven't had sex yet. I went to a doctor and asked about the different methods. i wanted to get on the patch, but I can't, being that my headaches and the patch mixed together could risk getting a stroke. It's the estrogen in the patch and other pills. She told me i might consider the shot...but I really don't want to go with it. I just was an easy birth control method that contains little or no estrogen. Help please!

If you're looking for a hormonal method, you may want to consider the mini pill - unlike the combination pill, it doesn't contain any estrogen. The mini pill is slightly less effective than the combined pill, but it's something you may want to ask your doc about.

Also, have you thought about simply pairing condoms with another barrier method, like a diaphragm or cervical cap? They're used only when you're having sex, they're non-hormonal and therefore don't put you at risk for stroke or blood clots, and paired with condoms are very effective.

To get an idea of what contraceptive methods are available in general, have a look at Scarleteen's article: Margaret Sanger’s Disneyland: An easy chart of your birth control options
