...It can be a challenge to find people who want to talk about nudism among the people who want to look at nudists on the internet. I became interested in nudism having found a handful of articles, but expanding my reading has some challenges. Namely ending up at the right kind of websites. sigh... I know there's a newer book by Larry Darter, American Nudist Culture, and another that's historical that looks quite interesting, Turning to Nature in Germany: Hiking, Nudism, and Conservation, 1900-1940 by John A. Williams.
I know a little about it and the culture, too, so would be happy to talk about it if you like.

Hey, I'd like to continue this post if the huge time gap isn't too jarring to the conversation. I'd love to talk to you about it if you've got the time Heather. Though i can see that these boards are filled with people who need help, whereas i am just curious. Thanks for the books. I am also going to check out "The naked child: growing up without shame" by Dennis Craig Smith and "A brief history of nakedness" by Philip Carr Gorman. To expand on where I'm coming from in all this: I am a practicing naturist who believes in "nakedness when naked is better, clothing when clothed is better." I'm scared by the way American culture oppresses nudity in any form other than sexual nudity, thus deeply sexualizing our bodies. I want to find other people who are as concerned and frankly appalled as i am, who like me are interested in challenging the cultural ideas we grew up with. I'm hoping to find a blog or forum for this, since they feel more personal and current than consuming books about the topic.

I'm not connected enough with these communities to know if there are any good blogs or forums that address nudism or nudist communities, but I'm willing to bet there are.
I agree with you: the body framed as being only or mostly about sex, and when naked ONLY framed that way is a pretty messed up thing, not a positive for anyone's sexuality (I don't think so, anyway), people's body image, and people's sense of self.
