I came across this fantastic book at work, and once it was released I had to go out and buy it.

Aimed at the young-adult market, it is a rather unique exploration of gender and identity. Jill, it's protagonist, transforms into a boy four days a month which she has hidden from everyone but her family under the guise of blood transfusions.

Jill herself isn't immediately likeable, but her quirky best friend, Ramie and a rare male, bisexual love-interest, not to mention Jack, Jill's porn-crazed alter-ego, make it well worth a read.

The ending is very positive, with Jack/Jill ready to embrace both sides of his/herself. It also resists painting Jill & Ramie's sexual orientations conclusively, because it really doesn't matter.

The author is working on a sequel.

Although I don't have much basis for comparison, to me this book didn't seem to be aiming at the queer or TG market - but rather the teen market. It provokes important questions without losing it's light, fun style.
