Ahh..Reviving Ophelia is written more towards the parents of young teenage girls (basically ages range, from what I gathered, anywhere from 11-17) Mary Pipher is a childs phychologist who specializes in the phyche and state of girls through their teenage years. In the book she talks about (and I quote) some of the issues girls face, especially nowadays, such as "Worshipping the God Of Thiness", "Now and Then", "Sex and Violence", "Divorce", "A Hurricane of Emotions", and also touches on the emotional, mental, physical, and acedemic sides of girls in their teens.
In the book, Pipher gives several examples in the form of patient conversations, of each of those areas. Each chapter has 2 or 3 stories of girls that she has met with, and the circumstances around each of their problems. To name a few, she counciled a girl who had gotten pregnant from a guy who used girls for sex; a young women who's father died of a drug overdose, and who hated her mother; and another of a teen who Pipher knew as a girl, who was tomboyish, physically active and independent, but who succumb to the ridicule and peer pressure of her fellow female classmates.
I found much truth in this book, after reading it cover to cover, several times in fact. I'd encourage anyone who has any of those problems to read it, and even those who don't, and get your parents to read it too. My mom read it, and gave it to me to read, and I think it's a great addition to anyones personal library.
my mother tends to obsess over whatever she's reading and drive us all crazy with it, but maybe i'll take a look at it...might be interesting to talk about with her.

I really like this book, but what I liked even better was "Ophelia Speaks," a bunch of first person narratives written by girls in this age group, speaking to the issues the Pipher book brought up.
