Funded by the taxpayer or otherwise, I want to hear about your faves, and maybe your least faves, too. Have any pro-condom campaigns really hit home for you? How about anti-homophobia campaigns? Anything else? Anything at all?
I have two. I searched for traces of them on the 'net, but found only one, so my description of the other will have to suffice. They're both from Quebec, and they go from one end of the spectrum right to the other.
The first ran about four years ago when I'd just started university here. It was on almost every city bus in Montreal, and, I think, not coincidentally, usually at the back of the bus. Y'know, to target the teenagers who usually occupy the seats there.
Anyway, it started with a series of multi-coloured ads, with colours swirling about, and condoms matching the colours strategically placed throughout. Then, once that seed had been planted in the back of people's minds, they pulled those ads, and just ran one-colour ads in each bus. For instance, you'd get in the bus, and see all of the ads at the back in bright yellow tones, with bright yellow condoms, and cool-looking teenagers in the ads, usually dressed somewhat in the featured colour. The thing that really made the campaign for me was that the teenagers in the pictures weren't the clean-cut preppy-types that you usually see in these sorts of public-awareness campaigns. They were the sort of people I wanted to be friends with. They had piercings, and tatoos, and hairstyles that weren't dated or generic. So, anyway, it tried really hard to put a positive spin on condom use. I'm not doing it justice here. It was that rare creature - a cool government campaign aimed at teens.
The other one (scroll about halfway down) basically tries to scare you into using condoms, and it run very recently in the province. It might still be running. It ran in alternative newspapers, always with one ad on a right-hand page, the second one on the next right-hand page, and the third one following in line. For those of you who don't click the link or don't read French, in one it showed a gravestone which had carved into it a woman injecting drugs. Another showed two men having anal intercourse. The last one showed a man and a woman having heterosexual intercourse. Each of the three gravestones had carved into it: "AIDS is still around". If you search around on the 'net like I did, you'll see that this campaign was a little controversial.
I have trouble seeing both of these ad campaigns going down very well in any of the other parts of Canada I've visited.
I've gotten the ball rolling here - what're some of your faves and least faves?
Anything that gets people talking is good, I say.
