Okay so I am a worrier by nature and was actually diagnosed by a psychiatrist with a generalized anxiety disorder. However, I don't believe that my disorder should prevent me from living a normal, healthy life, and from having a normal sex life.

I have, in the past few years of being sexually active, gotten much better at not worrying about things that I know are silly. However, one thing I can't seem to shake is my fear of contracting HIV.

Over the course of a year, I was tested 3 times. My last test occurred 4 months after my previous sexual encounter, with someone who had just gotten out of a monogamous relationship, and had been tested.

Following my last test, which was in February of 2012, I dated someone else who had been tested since his last sexual encounter, and I am now seeing someone who just got out of a monogamous relationship (hadn't been with anyone else in a while) and has been tested in the past year or so.

I know that I am not at risk but somehow I still feel anxious about this. Are there any techniques anyone uses that they could advise me on in terms of counteracting my anxiety? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As a side note, I am starting monthly counseling at the end of August.

I know exactly how you feel surrounding anxiety and sex. I've tried to get over the little things bothering me, but even those resurface sometimes!

I did some research on HIV a few months ago; and I understand your concern. Do you use condoms for sexual activity? Those drastically diminish the contraction of STI's. Also, if your partners have been tested and those results have come up negative and they had waited the appropriate length of time to get tested beforehand, you can rest assured that your chances of getting HIV are low. [Smile]

How would you feel about talking to your counsellor about this? He or she could give you some good coping strategies. I worry a lot, too; and one thing I do is rationally lay out my concerns, as objectively as possible. I try to tell myself that these fears are unfounded or irrational; and I try to just suppress thinking about them sometimes by going out, watching my favourite shows, or talking with my family. I overthink things too, so distracting myself after overanalyzing these anxieties helps, too. What normally calms you down after a long day at work or school? Whatever it is - tea, a bath, a walk, a favourite snack - try doing that and see what happens! [Smile]
