I was just wondering about how long laxatives take to work and how long do they stay in your system before they stop working? Also, what exactly does it do to your body? The only time I've ever heard of how they work is like from stupid shows like Dumb and Dumber and American Pie. So does it really make you sick like that? Like bad?? Thanks for any response!

A laxative is intended for short-term use to help aid in regulating the digestive system. Often times, over the counter laxatives instruct you to take them before bedtime, as they take about 8 or so hours to work, so you can have a bowel movement in the morning. Different laxatives will be slightly different in action, but most should come with patient information that explain their effects.
If you misuse or overuse laxatives, it can make you ill and is certainly not good for your digestive health.
It's best to only use a laxative if recomended or instructed to do so by a doctor.
