Brownish tinged discharge just before or just after menstruation is a common occurrence for many women. Some women it’s a day or two after, some it’s a week. For other women there’s a brownish tinged discharge at the two-week point between periods (spotting) as the body does it’s job in clearing out any unneeded substances from the body (in this case old blood) which has turned brown because it had been shed a while before now.

That said, discharge that is non-typical and generally is the sign of an infection are chunky or very heavy, be very watery or consistently profuse, have a strong odor, or be grayish, greenish, pinkish or yellow. If any of these signs show at any time it’s a good idea to make an appointment with your gyn. to rule out infections and illnesses. For more information on discharge in general Honorably Discharged: A Guide to Vaginal Secretions is a very informative article.
