So I'm doing this project on carbohydrates, and when it comes to simple sugars I have heard contradicting arguments. My biology teacher told us that diabetics can eat fructose, what they can't eat is refined sugars. But I'm looking at this website that says, quote, "the main health benefit, if any, in fructose-sweetened products would be if they, indeed, contained less sugar. People with diabetes or hypoglycemia (and probably everyone else, too) should avoid these sugary products along with the rest." I had also heard that diabetics cannot just have any fruit they want (ie mangos have a lot of sugar).
If the above is true, to stand up to my biology teacher's argument, could someone give me a reliable source with which to back it up? Also, I'm confused about what it says about hypoglycemia. I have that, and the first thing I do when I get a sugar drop is reach for a banana or a chocolate or something and I feel better. What is this that I should avoid fructose?

Uhh... as I recall, fructose is re-isomerized into glucose in the body. Actually, you can go back and forth between fructose and glucose in the body. Quick and dirty, here's a Wikipedia entry 'cause i don't have my biochem book handy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_isomerase
