Check this out!

"Japanese researchers have harvested stem cells from human menstrual blood, a medical conference has heard.

The researchers say these stem cells could be coaxed into forming specialised heart cells, which might one-day be used to treat failing or damaged hearts.

At the meeting of the American College of Cardiology, Dr Shunichiro Miyoshi reported that he and his colleagues at Keio University in Tokyo collected menstrual blood from six women and harvested stem cells that originated in the lining of the uterus.

They were able to obtain about 30 times more stem cells from menstrual blood than from bone marrow, Miyoshi says."

As someone with a heart defect from birth, let me be the first to say that is super cool! If I understand stem cell research stuff correctly, it could be used for more than just heart cells, correct?

From my limited biology experience, I believe stem cells can be encouraged to grow into a variety of different tissues. They're the first step - from stem cells, specialised cells develop.

If I remember rightly, anyway.

Yep, the whole reason stem cells are so valuable is because they're pluripotent (they can be induced to form any type of tissue).

It's too cool that stem cells can be harvested from menstrual blood - they're fairly rare otherwise, so this is just beyond awesome.

No, I hear you, twentysix. It definately puts a very, very interesting monkey wrench in the whole works.

Not only does it possibly set the fetal issue aside, if it came into use, it would also likely require that a certain squamishness about menstruation (that's my nice way of saying "stupid fear of women's bodies") be examined or brought to more light.
