This should have happened LONG before it did, and should have happened long before it did with all these groups. especially since we have long, long had data that things like this not only didn't "work," but have done people real harm.

But that still doesn't make this apology any less amazing, IMO.

quote:
I am sorry for the pain and hurt that many of you have experienced. I am sorry some of you spent years working through the shame and guilt when your attractions didn’t change. I am sorry we promoted sexual orientation change efforts and reparative theories about sexual orientation that stigmatized parents.

I am sorry I didn’t stand up to people publicly ‘on my side’ who called you names like sodomite—or worse. I am sorry that I, knowing some of you so well, failed to share publicly that the gay and lesbian people I know were every bit as capable of being amazing parents as the straight people that I know. I am sorry that when I celebrated a person coming to Christ and surrendering their sexuality to Him, I callously celebrated the end of relationships that broke your heart. I am sorry I have communicated that you and your families are less than me and mine.

Wow. I certainly still feel a lot of anger towards anyone involved with Exodus and other similar groups, but this is great news. And I'm amazed by the apology, too - I'm so used to insincere, "I'm sorry if you were offended" type apologies when people realize they've messed up.

Molias: I'm with you. This hardly makes all of this go away, and I'll also be curious to see, besides an apology, what these folks will do to help fix the harm they caused. especially since they made a ton of money causing it, so they have some to spend on repairs.

That said, I did think it was a pretty exceptional apology, and one that struck me as very earnest. And that's awfully unusual. Especially unusual to be paired with "and we're not going to do this anymore."

Wow! I really agree that the apology sounds sincere and think its certainly a stepping stone in the right direction. It also makes me hope that some of the parents and families of the people so hurt will read and try to understand the message being sent when it comes to accepting their loved ones.
