Hi,
I was looking at the front page and I noticed that the image for birth control bingo had a woman smoking a cigarette.

Since this site is aimed at young adults and since I'm sure that plenty of critics visit the site looking for ammunition against the wonderful sex-ed advice given out here, I would respectfully request that the image be edited. (Especially as it is the first thing that users see when they enter the website.)

Thanks,
Juniata

I'm not the artist, but I will say simply that I've noticed lots of the graphics used here intentionally portray women in 50's-esque fashion as a form of parody, and smoking was a hugely sexy thing. Notice the classy holder!

So, I don't think it's going to be an issue. But, Heather has the say, and we'll let her know to get back to you. :)

You know, we get to be light or funny sometimes, or tongue-in-cheek and wry. And yes: one of our signature styles in the decade we've done this have been to use retro graphics, which do not always reflect everyone's current mores (and that's been kind of the point: to gently make clear that cultural values change radically from era to era and are never set in stone, even though many people feel like they are). I'm not going to take time away from everything else to change that graphic, and to be frank, it's really not a users place to request that anything here which is not their own content be edited.

Of course, there have been plenty of people who feel that sex is no place for a sense of humor, but that's never been our feeling, and to boot, someone taking objection to something like the front graphic does not put Scarleteen at risk of no longer being able to operate or do our job.

Just for the record, per the user guidelines, a reminder that complaints are to be sent via email, not left on the boards. That has always been our policy, and that policy allows for us to invest our energy first and foremost into doing our actual job, which is addressing users' sexuality questions and concerns here. So, please abide by those guidelines in the future. Thanks. [Smile]
