I have been on many different birth control pills and have struggled with the effects of the hormones so I wanted to try a non-hormonal form of birth control. Condoms are useless because 9/10 sex fails when we use them and since we have been together 3 years, lived together for one, and are engagaed, I feel no need to subjet eithe rone of us to that. I keep seeing ads for paragard but when I looked it up, it looked terrifying, like a giant plastic anchor. I don't even understand how it is inserted. I'm trying to find out if women who have tried it have experienced any discomfort or difficulty having intercourse. I have also heard horrible stories about similar birth control methods causing permanent damage. What's the deal?

Here's a link to an article here about IUDs, and there's other links from that article, to get you started: http://www.scarleteen.com/birth_control_bingo_intrauterine_devices_iud

The kyriarchy usually assumes that I am the kind of woman of whom it would approve. I have a peculiar kind of fun showing it just how much I am not.

We can also certainly talk you through condom use: chances are something about how you're using them or you and your partner are thinking about them could be the issue here.

Too, just so you know, the Paragard IUD and modern IUDs now are not associated with "permanent damage." Decades ago, the IUDs at the time *were,* so those stories will often prevail, but the IUDs of now and those of yesteryear are very different devices.

To boot, you have other options, too, if you want to stay away from hormonal methods: for instance, you can talk to a contraception provider about cervical barriers.
