I took the plan B morning after pill, which is two pills, one taken 12 hours after the other. I took the second pill probably about 40 minutes too early. Will this damage the effectiveness of the pill? Thank you!

Not at all, there's nothing wrong with taking the second pill earlier than 12 hours. I believe some clinics will even let patients know that if they'd like, they can take both pills together - the instruction to take the second pill 12 hours later, if I'm not mistaken, is just because the high dose of hormones in EC can have side effects such as nausea, and by taking the dose in two seperate pills rather than all at the same time, you're minimizing the possibility of bad side effects. 12 hours is simply when you need to take it for the EC to be effective, as a whole.
So you're fine
Also, just remember that taking EC can cause some wonkiness in the next couple cycles, so you may or may not get your period normally or at a normal time this month!
