this may seem like a dumb question, but i have always wondered... whenever my friends get sick, they talk about swollen lymph nodes. where exactly on the neck are the ones located that swell. are they superficial to the skin or deep in the muscles? i looked on google and found some general areas where some are located, but can nowhere find how deep/superficial they are. if mine were swollen, would i be able to tell easily, or would have to push hard on my neck to find them? thanks and sorry if this is dumb.

Defineatly not a dumb question!

If your lymph nodes are swollen, they're generally not that hard to detect. A little bit of light pressure to the right area and you'll feel it.

As to where the 'right area' is ... The most common nodes to swell (when we're talking general cold and flu) are a few fingerbreadths below the ear and near the jaw. It's pretty hard to describe, but if you google 'swollen lymph nodes' and check the images section that may help.

They may be tender to touch.

Yes, they are on the sides of the neck.

They're not very deep when they're swollen, but you'll probably have to apply a little bit of pressure to feel them (unless they're VERY swollen and then you may even be able to see them!)
