I got a call from a friend in Virginia this afternoon … and a major headline on her news today was a new law being passed that says any adult tried and convicted of French kissing a child younger than 13 must register as a sex offender. They voted that it would be classed as a misdemeanor and once convicted the person can be put in jail for up to a year and get a fine of up to 2,500 dollars. The only vote no to this decision was delegate Phillip Hamilton – who voted no because he felt that this should be labeled a felony.

I was curious to see some other opinions. Do you think the decision was a good one? Should it be labeled a misdemeanor or a felony? Should other states think about this law as a possibility?

I don't think an adult French kissing a child under thirteen needs to be labeled a felony-- in all truth, it is not something that is on the same level as murder, rape, etc.

But at the same time, it is certainly not something positive and needs to be addressed by the law. An adult trying to kiss a child like that could definitely have tendencies for worse acts, like rape.
