This is a story that has been in the local news for some time now. Unfortunately I can only find this article from the Sun online, which isn't a very dependable news source, but it has the basic facts.
Basically, a woman was sexually abused by her brother-in-law over the span of 26 years. She recently filed charges against him and the trial has been brutal. The accused, Allan James Spence, was a fire chief in the Peguis First Nation and is a respected member of the community, which has thrown it's support behind him and shunned his accuser. Spence has denied everything, suggesting it was all a figment of her imagination although never taking the witness stand in his own defence. The woman has been shunned by her community as well as much of her own family. Spence recieved 7 years of jail time. No decision has been made to appeal at this time.
The above is a paraphrasing of an article from the Winnipeg Free Press (Wednesday March 31, 2004) "Fire chief jailed 7 years for rapes"
