The planet Mars hasn't been this close to Earth for nearly 60,000 years, and it's so bright that you can see it in the night sky with the naked eye anytime in the next week or so (weather permitting).
I'm in London, so being able to see anything in the night sky despite the light pollution is amazing, but it's right there, this bright red-orange dot.
So when it's night wherever you are, I seriously recommend taking a few minutes to go and have a look. You can spot it because it's the brightest object in the sky at the moment.
Nothing like 56 million kilometres to put things into perspective .

Star gazing is a passion of mine, but it seems that the Irish weather doesn't seem to appreciate this.
The sky hasd been clouded over something rotten the last week or so. I love just looking up, it makes me feel so powerful for some reason, for being part of such a universe as the one I live in.

it's been visible for pretty much the whole month. i saw it earlier this month in boston, and it was so bright i thought it was venus.
now i'm up at school in lovely maine, and the air is so clean that you can see EVERYTHING. it's beautiful. the other night some of the astronomy profs had an event at the observatory where they set up a bunch of telescopes. there was a really long line to use the 14" scope, which would have been cool, but we got to look through the 8" one and it was amazing! we could see the polar ice cap and the highland mountains. very very cool.

------------------ Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together; sophistication demands that they submit to sex immediately without proper preliminary talk. Not courting talk - real straight talk about souls - for life is holy and every moment is precious. I heard the Denver and Rio Grande locamotive howling off in the mountains. I wanted to pursue my star further. -Kerouac
