About a month ago I was going to book a flight to Madison, WI to see my family. There's no direct flights from Houston, TX to Madison, WI so it's always expensive to go there. When I checked a month ago, the flights were all the way down to $280 - an all-time low. I should have booked it when I had the money, because now flights are back up to $370. I want to go from July 8th or so to the 29th. My aunt might drive me and the rest of the family to Wisconsin on July 5th, but I'd need a flight from Madison to Houston - one way flights are even more expensive than roundtrip!!!!!

Does the war have anything to do with this? And do you think the fares will go back down? Do you know of anywhere else that I can get them for under around $350? Please help me.

I've tried cheaptickets.com, nwa.com, and delta.com.

If you were in Canada, I'd say go to seatsale.ca, it's the greatest site EVER!

A lot of airlines are having trouble right now, even just paying their people, because of terror alerts, etc. So seat sales aren't exactly the first things on their mind.

But I'll keep a lookout for you, I'm a plane junkie.

Okay... try Priceline.com
-you propose a price to them, and tell them your dates, and they assign flights to you. I've never seen a system work like that, but when i plugged your info (with my name) in, and proposed a price of 280, they offered a price of 315.

Expedia.com and travelocity.com
-search for you

Thanks cupcake!

I'm pretty sure you have to either
a) be 18 to use Priceline, or
b) be on a plane with someone who is over 18 who purchased the tickets off of Priceline.

Yeah I've tried travelocity. I've been looking out on there. So it didn't have anything to do w/ the war you don't think?

Sorry, I forgot that you aren't 18 yet. :P

I think it has to do with a lot of things, mainly that people aren't traveling as much now. Terror alerts, SARS, the war, the US economy being down...etc etc etc

Kepp checking around...the prices will naturally go up and down. MSN had an article on it recently, you might want to check it out if you can find it.

Well i'm currently in Pheonix, I got here with my Priceline.com ticket I bought. Which I paid $256 for, which is round trip.

To use priceline you have to be eighteen, have a credit or debit card. Your parents can buy you your ticket and mark it for someone under 18, but then they have to have a plane buddy for you, like the stewardesses have to make sure you get on your flights....blah blah blah.

Once you put your bid it, and if it's accepted there is no backing out. It's not a yes or no thing, you put your bid in and it comes out of your account immediatly. I put a bid in for $200 and that was declined but they gave me the next nearest price which I accepted.

Right now there are promotional fares on Southwest Airlines (www.southwest.com) between Houston and Chicago for $79 each way. Would you be able to convince your relatives to drive you from Chicago to Madison and back? If not, you can also take a bus from Chicago to Madison - I've never done it, so I'm not sure how often it runs or how much it costs, though. (If you need info on how to get from one part of Chicago to another, I can help you with that.)

Another airline site that's worth looking at is orbitz.com - occasionally I've found flights on there that I haven't found on travelocity or expedia.

Do you mean a plane buddy as in an "airport guide" that costs extra money? A few years ago when I used to fly to Madison my Mom bought a $60/per way ($120) guide for me that went EVERYWHERE with me. It was a big help, but a lot of money and I'm sure I could find my way around an airport alone, now. Is this required if I fly on priceline.com?

Also, thanks Laura! I was thinking about flying into Chicago and convincing an aunt to pick me up, but decided not to. I never considered taking a bus, but then I don't think my parents would allow me to, either. I'll think about it! Thank you so much, guys! And keep posting!

I believe the guide is based on different airlines and their policies, do to the liability involved. I'm not sure, you might want to check out different airlines' websites and see what they say.
