Over the course of the past three weeks I have found myself staying up all night long just to watch a game I've never seen before. I've been late to work almost every day since the darned thing started, and I just can't help it.
When the US beat Mexico, I thought that Los Angeles was about to burn itself down. Apparently everyone had decided to stay up and catch the game, and I was amazed the next morning when there were no protests or flag-burning ceremonies.
All in all, I'm diggin' the World Cup in a big way. Never mind the fact that we're out of the tourny...there's always Germany, right?
(Don't let us down, Caro!)

Of course!!! We watched the big England v. Brazil match at school, I lost my voice coz I was shouting at the TV!
I was very disappointed that England lost, being and English girl myself, but to be honest, the main reason I wanted them to win the world cup is because David Seaman (our goalee) promised to cut off that nasty ponytail if we won.
Anyway, we'll be back in 4 years time to kick some ass (hopefully)

Ahem? the 'big bag Englanders'??! we were doing very well thank you very much until the big bad Brazilians beat us *sniff sniff*. I find it odd that the World Cup means so much here, everyone takes it so seriously, yet the USA don't really support soccer much at all, and they had a really good team (yes, yes, although Germany still beat 'em..grr). Football's a fun sport to watch, it's a lot more passionate than cricket or golf (in my opinion anyway).

Sure I follow fussball. After all "our team" is surprisingly shockingly good - against all pre-world cup expectations.
Was so good to see South Korea win today, - nah, not just because I think they'll be easier to beat for Germany than Spain, considering how totally tired the Koreans are after all these taxing games: they truly have really enthusiastic fans, and what is better than all these unexpected wins in your own home country?
In general - what a weird World Cup this is: all the faves are out.

I love soccer. It's definately one of the best sports around.
South Africa didn't go through because we lost 2-3 to Spain . Our goalie (André Aransa) fumbled and Spain scored the easiest goal in soccer history. I can't stay too mad at André, though. He is a brilliant goalie. I would even say he's as good Peter Shmeichel(sp) when he played. All the games in Korea/Japan are during the day here so I haven't lost any sleep.
The Ireland vs Spain game was exciting. I wanted Ireland to win. Sorry about the US and England losses . Go Senegal, go!!
I can't wait until the cricket and rugby world cups next year

speaking of football, and americans and weirdness, BruinDan and I are watching Germans playing American football (or more appropriately handoval) on tv. American hegemony at work. We really are globalizing, monoculture imperialists
i wish i were watching World Cup

I'm cheering for them because they beat the Spanish, who knocked my beloved Irealand out of the cup, and caused the celebrations, goodwill and carnival atmosphere to end over here!

I stayed up last night to watch some of the korea and spain game, but i was exhausted and fell asleep after 45 minutes. I'm a huge football/soccer fan. I'm not really rooting for any particular team, just in there getting excited.

well, imho, brasil really wasn't that much of a fave, compared to portugal and argentina and france: people were joking about this years team being disorganised and old and all, eh? they lost to honduras, after all in the pre-cup touring!
really, i have no misconceptions that if germany pulls through to the final (gotta beat south korea first, and well, they shouldn't be underestimated), we'll be going down against brasil, i am pretty sure. turkey is terribly motivated to pay brasil back for the first round loss...so...
a final germany - turkey would be terrible though. no matter what the results, i am sure we'd get riots over here....
but anyway. i am happy about the german performance. way better than i ever expected.
Home game advantage makes a huge difference in World Cup games. I'm not sure, but I would say that a lot of World Cup victories were those of home teams. I would not be surprised at all if South Korea got through. Germany vs. Brazil would be the most exciting match in my opinion.

I guess I'm cheering for Brazil, as well, because my Mom used to live there, and I know from talking to people there what soccer means to them. I had been cheering for Argentina, because of some quotes I read from players on the team, talking about how when they play in the World Cup, it isn't for them, it's very much for their country. They also sounded pretty progressive.
I'd like to get into the World Cup, and soccer in general the way the rest of the world seems to, but some things about the game just make that so difficult.
Like, that story about the Korean player scoring against Italy, and then he got released from his Italian club. That's just ridiculous. I didn't see any of the Canadian hockey players get released from their American clubs after Canada beat the U.S. for the Olympic gold. You'd think there was some sort of discrimination law against what that Italian team did, really.
Or the match from the first round, between Italy and Mexico (again with the Italians) where, in the dying minutes once both teams were assured of moving onto the second round, they just kicked the ball back and forth between one another. The match ended as both teams wanted it to, in a 1-1 draw.
What is that? If I get up at 5 in the morning to watch sports, I want to see at least the illusion of competitiveness.
Maybe these stories are indicative of some sort of football culture that people like me will just never understand.
Still, though, I'll probably watch at least part of the final.

Dzun, that thing about the Korean player being kicked out of his Italian club is beyond my understanding, too. All Italians I've talked to seemed to be totally behind it though. Football is a religion there. Experienced it when Juventus Turin won the Chamions League in 96 while I was in Rome. Never seen that sort of thing before or after.

Hey, it could be worse. Like that poor soul back in 1994 who played for Ecuador. He kicked the ball into his own net and got his team eliminated. When he returned home, he was shot and killed by a former fan. Now that is just out of control.

I doubt it's worth it to him to pursue the matter, Slayer. His value as a player has increased so much during this tournament that some other team will sign him and pay him millions. I'm sure playing and earning big money is a better use of his time than spending time in Italian court bringing proceedings against Perugia.
The other thought is that he probably wouldn't even want to play in Italy anymore. I certainly wouldn't want to play in front of tens of thousands of fans who were hostile to me, day in, day out. I mean, fans for opposing sides in the Italian league would probably pack their stadiums for games against Perugia, just so they could let that poor Korean have it.
Anyway, while I have nothing against Italians, I'll certainly be cheering against them in World Cups to come.

Oh, I wouldn't want to play either, but the club s just dumping him and costing him money. If he was a lesser player, then maybe he mgith not be so lucky as to be in such huge demand.
So, bye bye Turkey(no offense, but up against Brazil, what a surprise)

I think he Korean got rehired but if I were him I would tell them to go jump.

i've been watching all the matches and i think personally germany and brazil have been the most consistent.....brazil has this knack of playing perfect football and then something goes dramatically wrong in the last minute like in france 98....hopefully it won't happen this time....i'm rooting for brazil. i think portugal is a good team, it just wasn't there day when they lost to the americans....figo is the most valuable player fifa picked and he deserves that title....another promising player is ronaldhino....at 22...he's got loads and loads of talent and the years will only add to his experience. i think there have been a few bad calls by the refrees....i really don't think ronaldhino should have been red carded at the england match....yellow card maybe, certainly not a red card. korea had an amazing run....and the good thing is, true enough, it's too bad that they lost, but what you gotta admire is the way the fans support them and stand behind them no matter what, unlike some of the high profile countries like the argies and the frenchies that have huge reps but got sent off early and riots and all hell broke loose in the home countries...their fans only support them when they win, and i admire the koreans for still waving their arms and beating their drums, even with tears pouring down their faces and they gave their team a hero's send of....i guess it's a case of ego....anyway, hopefully brazil manages to win...what i don't like about brazil is the inter-team rivalry....is rivaldo scores, ronaldo HAS to match up and vice versa....and roberto carlos sometimes just doesn't pass the ball but tries to make the goal for himself...and we all know anout rivaldo's acting....politely reffered to as "simulation" which is also known and cheating...and watching brazil play is a totally different experience...the fluidity with which they pass the ball, the goals that seem to appear just magically, especially ronaldino's free kick against england....i wish it could have been an england brazil final cuz i really didn't wanna see england go....and i just have to adore the way robbie keane from ireland cartwheels whenever he scores...i felt really bad when they lost to spain.... ...and poor senegal....they had the most amazing run ever!...anyway....sorry to go on and on like this....fingers crossed for brazil to raise the cup on sunday!!

hehe had to post here, since Portugal was thrown out of the cup (by evil Korea >=)) i was supporting brazil, coz we're language friends actually, i just wanted either some european country or brasil to win hehe (sorry all ) but since brazil is our language friend (yea yea) and there are hundreds or millions of brazilians where i live, and i personally have friends there, i was really more for brazil than germany so when brazil won that game it was as if my own country was winning
