As you know, wherever you are from, a lot of us have homecomeing coming up. And today we had a pep-assembly which made me mad.

You know how you have homecoming court or whatever...all the people that won or were even elected for my school were elected because they were either popular, pretty or both. I know these people are not nice because I have classes with many of them and when I try to talk to them or be nice the ignore me like they're so much better than I am (and many other people are). It was a glorified beauty and popularity contest. I think I should have had the option of going to the library or study hall or something. I am pulling probably atleast a 3.0 gpa and I am nice to mostly everyone and I know I wouldn't have won that (If I did run, which I never will for obvious reasons) because I am not popular or pretty enough.

What do you chicos and chicas think? (Sorry if I just slaughterd the spanish language, feel free to correct me at any time.)

being the jaded, social pariah that i am, i'd have to say Homecoming was an overglorified popularity contest. Though I planned most of it (3 years on student council, somebody's gotta do the work!), I was not nominated, which really didn't bug me.

A lot of the people on the court had little else in their lives but high school. 3 years later, where are they now?

Anyway, don't fret over it. let them have their time the sun. We will have our own someday.

Its not necicarily me that I am mad about, I mean, I can handle it, it dosen't bug me any because I have very high confidence and good friends.

but for someone who does not have alot of confidence seeing an overglorified beauty pagent could be emotionaly damaging. I mean seeing people cheer for people who act all better than you and put you down is not fun.

and no one should have to sit through popularity contests if they don't want to. and if they go to study hall, its better to do your homework then watch popular people scream and jump

Something I did, but it takes a hell of a lot of backing to do it, was actively RUN for Homecoming Court as Queen of the Freaks.

And I made it.

Basically, we started by printing up ambiguous posters with me in a Fifties bathing suit on them...xeroxed a million and put them all over the school, got the word out among the geeks and drama nerds and comp sci freaks and all the journalism students and basically those who felt neglected, and I got in.

kinda cool.

I wore a vintage velvet-and-feather dress, and it was very very interesting.

so - though I disagree with the idea of homecoming, you are free to make it anything you want it to be...

Dude I love my school Not only do we have block scheduling (three classes one day, three classes the next day, 25 min "nutrition breaks" in between each class) but our assemblies aren't mandatory. Except if you take the bus you have to hang out until the regular time school gets out. But our assemblies are pretty fun.

Isn't high school just one big popularity contest? Who is the president and vice prez at your school? I bet it's not someone who really deserves it, just some popular person who decided hey why not. In fact, no one runs against the popular people because they're too afraid they'll be embarrassed and lose.

What can you do about it? Nothing. I know that at our school in all the clubs you are supposed to nominate a king and queen and then they go to like, semifinals to decide if they are on the court, and then they all get crowned. And since even the geeky clubs (like chess and key club, which I'm a part of so I'm not doggin on it) have to vote for someone, we have a wide range of people up.

I'm not saying that I'm against popular people and I'm not sayint that they don't deserve it. I'm just agreeing and saying it's the popular people that get it.

I understand where u r coming from. My school is a total footbal school, and you are a jock they consider you a god. They really popular girls thought it was stupid to be a cheerleader, so all the unpopular girls tried our, and I thought that would be cool 'cause I knew most of them from Junior High, but the second they put that uniform on, their noses go right up in the air.

I HATED high school and junior high school because of all the cliques, I was never into them because I'm basiccally friends with everyone from the weird dorks to the most popular people. I never understood why popularity was so important to everyone. Now that I'm in College, a lot of the VERY popular people who didn't give a damn about me and I didn't care for them, are now not so popular and I don't know, it's interesting to see. *smiles*

I'm not against popular people, some of them really are good people. But I do see what you mean about the insecure people thinking that being pretty and popular is everything and if they're not, they feel less or not good enough. Being popular is not everything. No, REALLY, it's not! That's what I've learned.

I guess my school is lucky. Our school president is the nicest of nice girls. She was in my math class. And she is the only nice cheerleader. Our vice president is a drama geek. Yes, he is one of the most popular seniors. Last year's homecoming king is THE biggest drama geek I know. Actually, both the king and the queen were. They were elected because they were all around nice people. My class officers are popular, but they are nice people to be around. They are very outspoken, and kind. Like I said. Lynnwood is lucky.

I am not saying all popular people are mean and stuck up, because people who are nice and smart should be popular, but the people who were elected on the homecoming court in my school were mean popular people...

There are alot of nice popular people in my school, but none of them were elected.

My school doesn't have homecoming or anything, but we have student representatives for different stuff. I don't even remember what the positions are, but my grade actually elected the people we thought would do the best job representing us and seeing that our concerns are paid attention to. We picked a super smart and super nice (nonpopular) girl and a really cool(my opinion) punk, out, gay boy(nonpopular). We knew that they would deal with stuff like if we wanted marshmallows in the cafeteria or to protest the dress code. No one really likes the popular people anyway.
