Many people choose to become celibate while in a relationship, whether it is to take some time for themselves to sort out personal issues with body image, to recover from something traumatic such as a rape, because they can't tolerate the risk of pregnancy (because no birth control is 100% effective!), or for health reasons, just to name a few possibilities.

It can be very difficult to be celibate, especially if you're in a relationship where you and your partner have already been sexually active; unfortunately, many people are not understanding when their partner tells them they no longer want to be sexually active.

I want to hear your experiences with this- have you ever decided to become celibate, whether temporarily or permanently, while you were in a relationship? How did your partner react to this? Do you have any tips for someone considering this?

(And just to clear up a common misconception before we start: celibacy and abstinence are not quite the same thing. Celibacy is when you give up all sexual activity, while abstinence does not necessarily mean giving up all sexual activities. For example, someone who is abstinent may still choose to have oral or manual sex but not penetrative intercourse.)
