Are pregnancy tests reliable at all points throughout a pregnancy? Can the hcg levels get so high after a point that home tests misread it?

Yes, pregnancy tests would be accurate all throughout pregnancy. Once hCG levels reach a certain point they can be detected by home tests (exact level depends on the individual test). Levels don't drop down to pre-preg levels until after delivery. And the tests don't have a "top end" level...so as long as the level is above their minimum, they'll come up positive.
If it helps, when I was about 5 months pregnant, I ran across an extra test in my bathroom and peed on it just cause I could. (It was due to expire before I'd even possibly have cause to actually use it again and I didn't know anybody else who might need it, so figured I'd use it in my experiment.) Sure enough, it showed positive.
