i just started my period early this morning. when i started i put a pad on and went back to sleep. when i woke up to pee and looked it was the normal flow i usually have but it was like brown/black.

Hey there, la_city88- welcome to Scarleteen!

It's not unusual for menstrual blood to be brown, or eve close to black, in color. Provided that you're not experiencing anything else out of the ordinary, you don't have any reason for concern.
