So, I know that the first pill in a pack is the most important one because it prevents you from ovulating. Why wouldn't it make more sense to take it a day early each month, just to be extra sure? I think I'm missing something here.

Birth control pills hav been well-researched (over decades) in the pattern in which they're currently prescribed, and they've been found to be effective when taken in that pattern.
There's certainly nothing stopping you from only taking a six day break from active pills; just know that taking them that way isn't something that has been researched and varified scientifically to be safe over a long period of time and that there isn't, to my knowledge, any evidence to show that it's any more effective to do so.
Does that make sense?
