I have been taking birth control pills for 8 years now. I have been on Gianvi for maybe 1 1/2 to 2 years now. On November 20th, I started Loryna ( just like Gianvi, it is a Yaz generic). I wasn't sure if I needed to use back-up protection, since I was switching pills, even though they are pretty much the same thing. My boyfriend and I decided to use condoms as a back-up for one month, until I started the next pack on Dec. 18th.

Last Friday, Dec. 9th, I had to take my pill in the bathroom of a show that I was at. Never have any problem swallowing my pills without water, but couldn't for some reason, I couldn't swallow it. Most, if not all, of my pill dissolved in my mouth before I could get a cup of water.

I have two questions regarding this. First one is does the pill dissolving in my mouth compromise the effectiveness of the pill? Also, I had sex with my boyfriend
that night, but we used a condom. Since I only had four active pills in the pack left (took the rest of the 4 active pills, and on the placebo ones now; will start my new pack this Sunday), do I have to still use condoms as back-up in my new pack, and for how long?

Hi Ebaron, welcome to Scarleteen!

I believe the pill needs to be absorbed through the digestion system to be fully effective, but as long as you used condoms correctly (on the whole time, no unprotected genital contact, no rips or tears), I don't think you would have had a pregnancy risk.

In terms of your second question, as long as you start your next pack of pills on time, then you can rely on them for protection.

Intercourse without a barrier method (like condoms) does pose STI risks though. If you and your boyfriend have never been tested, I would highly recommend it.

Hope this helps!

Thank you. I am due to get my "pill" period tomorrow. If I get it, does that mean I am ok (I.e. not pregnant), or is that too soon ? (only a week and a day after the pill incident)..
Yes, my boyfriend and I have been tested, and I get tested every year.

If you get your withdrawal bleed (your "period" on the pill) that means you are not pregnant, yes.
