Hello!

I've read your page on healthy discharge vs. unhealthy discharge, but I'm honestly not sure where I fit in and I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out. I'm thinking about visiting a doctor, but I thought I'd ask around here first.

Okay. So, I suppose I'll describe it first? The discharge I get from sexual arousal is pretty normal, but I'm concerned about what happens just during the day. I've always had fairly thick discharge, and it's never been an issue. Lately, though, it's sort of had the consistency of...wet paper? I know that's really gross, but I don't know how else to describe it. I'm just a little unclear on where the line between "thick" and "unhealthy-thick" would be. When I first noticed it, it happened usually right after my period, and it would go back to normal after a day or two. Lately, it's just been happening without any sort of pattern. I've never had any genital-to-genital contact...just manual sex with other ladies.

Sorry for the novel, haha. Any advice at all would be appreciated :-)

So, this has usually ONLY been happening right after your period?

Are you using tampons during your period?

Up until very recently, it only happened for a day or two afterward, yes. Now it just comes and goes.

I do use tampons, typically.

What you might be seeing is actually fibers left over from the tampon. That seems more likely to happen with those which aren't 100% cotton (many are not), or if you're leaving them in for too long.

So, I'd first try either switching from tampons to a cup or pads, or switching to a better brand (all cotton, no bleaches, etc.) and being sure you're changing them as often as you should be.

Thank you so much!

I sort of suspected that, actually, but then I wasn't sure when it started happening at different times. I've scheduled a docotor's appointment just in case, but I'll definitely take your advice and switch up products.

Good call on also scheduling the apppointment. Because one other possibility you may be seeing is an overgrowth of yeast: sometimes yeast infections can look a bit like that, too.
