Hi, I am on birth control and have been for over a year. I think I am experiencing breakthrough bleeding but i'm not sure. I'm not supposed to get my withdrawal bleed for another two weeks (on the second week of active pills). I just went to the washroom and I am bleeding. There is a bit, not sure if this is what is called breakthrough bleeding. Is this an indication that my bc is failing or that I am pregnant? Also, could this be because of an injury during sex on the weekend (slight tearing). Am I still protected? Could this also be because I had sex before my period was over and then after sex it seemed to just stop? (there was quite a bit of blood then seemed to stop during sex and completely after sex.
Thanks so much.

Breakthrough bleeding is not a sign that your pill has stopped working, or that you are pregnant. It just happens sometimes. It can be caused by changes in your life (different eating or sleeping patterns, stress, etc), and sometimes it'll just happen for no obvious reason at all.

I would not think, however, that it's from any injury (if you got injured last weekend, you'd have spotted then, not 5 days later) or from having sex at the end of your withdrawal bleed.
