Is there any reason not to use a gentle lotion on one's nipples, or is that perfectly safe?

That should be perfectly safe. Obviously nipples are more sensitive than other areas of the body, so it is possible a lotion that hasn't irritated you before will irritate your nipples, so just wash it off and discontinue use should that be an issue.
