Anything goes in terms of effectiveness as long as you take at least 21 active pills and never go more than 7 days in between pill packs. Taking less than 21 or extending the pill-free break compromises effectiveness.
In terms of safety, it's less set in stone. Generally, if you're looking to do anything extreme like limit/eliminate your withdrawal bleeds for months at a time, it's worth a quick call to your doctor to see what he/she advises. :)
