If the pill is less effective if one is taken late, then how is it possible that I'm protected from pregnancy during the whole 7 day placebo week?

During days 22-28 of a standard 28-day menstrual cycle (which is mimicked during pill use) the body naturally stops producing progesterone. This drop in hormone levels allows you to have a period.
The placebo week provides an artificial decline in progesterone to allow you to bleed. You're entirely protected from pregnancy during this time if you've been taking your pills correctly.
