Hi advocates,

I've come for your excellent guidance. I have been using the birth control in combination with the pill for over a year. I love the concept of the pill, but I've had pretty bad side effects. For me, switching brands has pretty much meant switching to a new set of side effects.

Several people have suggested a diaphragm. I know it's a method not often mentioned on Scarleteen because of the lack of STD protection. My partner and I have been monogamous for over a year now though, are STD-free, and would be using the diaphragm in combination with condoms. It would be a very big weight off my mind to double up on birth control somehow. I'm a fairly methodical person so I don't have many worries about using the diaphragm correctly, but I was wondering if anyone now knew if the diaphragm was less effective or unusable, even, without the application of spermicide. I did a search for a thread on this and came up with one that resulted in advice to ask a doctor, which I intend to do as soon as I can get an appointment. But in the meantime, does anyone have any experience, or know if it's possible to use a diaphragm without spermicide? (The Planned Parenthood website indicates that spermicide is necessary.) I don't have any allergies to it, but I think my years on the ST boards have made me very wary of nonoxynol-9.

Or, if anyone has any suggestions for non-hormonal birth control that would be as effective, I'm very open to them!

Thanks so much.

I've never heard of using a diaphragm without spermicide. I don't know if/how this would alter it's effectiveness.

The best thing i can suggest for you to do now is to speak to your doctor.

And from what you've described, condoms (male or female) seem like a great option.
