Every night in the shower I wash the outer parts of my vagina with soap and use my fingers to 'clean out' the general area (I don't stick them inside myself). But I've recently been told this is unhealthy. Is this true, and if so, what is the best alternative way to keep the area clean and free of discharge?

Well, your vulva will never be "free of discharge" as discharge is just a normal function.

But soap and water is a perfectly fine way to keep your vulva clean. The only concern is if you're using a harsh soap, which some women find irritating. If you're not having problems, though, then everything is fine.

Hope this helps,
